**The Importance of Numeracy**

**Numeracy** complements literacy and is sometimes called ‘mathematical literacy’. Both skills are needed in order to function fully in modern life. Being numerate means being able to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts and to apply these in a range of contexts and to solve a variety of problems.

One of the biggest cross-national tests is the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which every three years measures reading ability, math and science literacy and other key skills among 15-year-olds in dozens of developed and developing countries. The most recent PISA results, from 2015, placed the U.S. an unimpressive 38th out of 71 countries in math and 24th in science. Among the 35 members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which sponsors the PISA initiative, the U.S. ranked 30th in math and 19th in science (source: Pew Research)

**How is STEMulates tackling this challenge?**

Algebra has been universally accepted as a gateway skill. It is a bridge to high-level math course: Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus and Calculus. Students who take an Algebra course by the 8^{th} grade are more likely to pursue careers in Engineering and other STEM fields. Students who take Algebra by the 8^{th} grade will be able to take a Calculus course while in high school. Students who are exposed to Calculus in High School generally are more successful in their first-year mathematics courses in college.

*Algebra by 7 ^{th} Grade (AB7G)*

Algebra by 7^{th} Grade (AB7G) has been launched as a pilot program, hosted by STEMulates in Cincinnati and Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN. The program begins with students in the 3^{rd} grade and continues each year until the 7^{th} grade where the students are exposed to Algebra. The students are tracked by cohort with test scores measured against their classmates.

*AB7G Plus*

Algebra by 7^{th} Grade (AB7G) Plus is a boot camp style program for students who have completed an Algebra course. Since all higher level Math courses rely heavily on Algebra, we utilize AB7G Plus sessions to emphasis Algebraic concepts while teaching new skills in Geometry, Algebra II, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus and Calculus

*STEM League*

The STEM League is AAU style competitive Math league that was created to get students energized around the importance of math. Participants in the league also improve their numeracy skills through practice and repetition.

*Academic Support*

In partnership with local engineering professionals and students, we offer discounted subject tutoring for students in need of extra support. We provide private and group sessions for local area students.

## Ten Things To Know About Numeracy

- 1. Numeracy is to mathematics what literacy is to reading.
- 2. Numeracy is important for individuals to develop logical thinking and reasoning strategies in their everyday lives
- 3. 24 of 25 of the highest paid jobs upon college graduation require students to be proficient at math
- 4.

If you can figure this out.

You can figure this out.

- 5. Research shows that students who want to pursue an engineering career need to be enrolled in Algebra by 8th grade
- 6. Proficiency in Algebra is an indicator for success in future math courses (Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus)
- 7. The ACT/SAT is still the most heavily weighted metric in most school admissions
- 8. In some districts, 5th grade students must test into Honors Math in order to be on a pathway to take a Calculus course before graduating high school.
- 9. Students who are exposed to Calculus in high school perform better in their first year Math courses in college.
- 10. Math is used every day in our lives, from cooking to shopping to playing pool.
