S3 (Safe Spaces for Students)

Our S3 program is designed to create informal STEM learning in safe, community spaces. We collaborate with community partners to create STEMulation Zones in which students can learn skills and receive support in a safe and nurturing environment. This allows them to learn freely and effectively contribute to the growth of their communities. Research shows that weekends, after school and summer break are the most dangerous times for urban youth. These STEMulation Zones will provide a safe outlet for the youth in our communities.

These spaces focus on programming and training for the youth. Local volunteers from universities and companies serve as tutors and workshop facilitators for students who participate in the center programming. During school hours, the zone can be available to provide adult training for community members.

Curriculum for the STEMulation Zone is developed by the STEMulates team and corporate partners. Our curriculum team, held by K-12 educators and collegiate faculty bring significant experience in developing, implementing and evaluating STEM curriculum. Trained site leaders and volunteers provide on-site implementation of the curriculum.

Our S3 provides three spaces in which to engage families:

EPICC STEMulation - Empowering Students in Community Churches (EPICC) STEMulation provides programming in churches in urban areas.  Through the program, we provide a learning space in local communities that is led by families and other community leaders.

Community STEM Centers- STEM courses are free and open to families who already visit the community recreation and learning centers, including afterschool spaces.. The community centers focus on programming and training for the youth. Local volunteers from universities and companies serve as tutors and workshop facilitators for students who participate in the center programming. These centers can be available to provide adult training for community members.

STEMTime -  STEMTime is a virtual out-of-school designed to increase student access to ongoing learning in their homes and other comfortable spaces. Families can download lesson plans and other STEM kits to complete projects.
